Original Commentary
Poor Brisbane... doesn't suspect a thing. Little did he know it was just a big ruse to get him to dance with Kimberly!
Ok... not really, but I'm sure Kimberly would be insulted if you didn't think so.
Modern Commentary
This festival may have been inspired by the Los Angeles County Fair. We had just gone to it that September and could easily envision Brisbane and Kimberly at something similar. - Terrence Tuesday, October 19th 2004 - [119]A Date in the Park (7 of 15)
Original Commentary
It's a little known fact men only say they don't know to dance only to get away with grabbing their partners in inappropriate areas. Well, maybe not- but it got Brisbane the most action he's ever gotten so far from Kimberly.
Modern Commentary
They've got music at the LA County Fair - there are concerts, a bandstand, the finals for the county marching band competition, and probably a few things I'm forgetting about. Nowhere to dance, though.

Original Commentary
Who needs conversation when you have the flow of the music?
Modern Commentary
It's good to see Kimberly getting out of the house and, more importantly, getting out of her own head. That's what this is about - things can be different. You are not trapped. Life is not an endless cycle of carpools with Emily, re-typing numbers, and sleeping.
It's good to move. It's good to move together.
I just love how much life the art has here. Everything about it. The colors, the trees, the monochrome randos in the background so you know that Brisbane and Kimberly aren't isolated but they remain the focal point. - Terrence Thursday, October 21st 2004 - [121]A Date in the Park (9 of 15)
Original Commentary
That funnel cake sign was a font of my own creation- I think it came out rather nice...Terrence and I went to a county fair shortly before creating this arc... and shared a funnel cake. Call it art imitating life, if you'd like... I'd call it cute.
Modern Commentary
Back in the distant year of 2004, automatic font creation technology wasn't great. We printed out a form, Isabel filled in all the letters, and we scanned it and sent it back with twelve bucks. What we got was ok but the letter spacing was off and it wasn't suitable for much use. It's unfortunate, since Isabel has beautiful handwriting (but I tend to rewrite comics a lot as I go, which makes hand-lettering difficult) - Terrence
Friday, October 22nd 2004 - [122]A Date in the Park (10 of 15)
Original Commentary
Originally the comic's scripting went a little differently, Kimberly just kissed Brisbane instead of "tricking" him into the kiss. I always enjoy the way spontaneous last-minute changes to the comics go, especially this one.
Modern Commentary
Not the first kiss; there were a few in Unlike Minerva. But this is probably the first time she actually meant it. Advancement is slow and tentative, with plausibly deniable steps that you could play off as jokes if things don't go well. - Terrence
Sunday, October 24th 2004 - [123]Fantasies (1 of 1)
Modern Commentary
And unrelated Sunday!
I'm a huge fan of The Monkees. After the TV series ended, they made a movie, Head. It was a surrealist, counterculture thing. By that I mean it didn't make much sense, but on purpose.
There's a scene where Micky Dolenz, stranded in the midddle of the desert, captured an Italian army tank. I could explain more, but it wouldn't help.
This might have been an influence here, but I'm not sure if I talked Isabel into watching that movie before this comic ran. I'm not sure how I talked her into watching it.
I have to agree with Kimberly. We're currently in a desert. As I write this, it's 106 degrees outside. It's better to be warmed up when you're cold than to just always be warm.
Also, I'm pretty sure this is the first time that Brisbane's middle name has shown up in the comic. He's had it since around when Unlike Minerva began. It never showed up anywhere besides the various notes and planning documents, but I felt it was important that he have one.
Caleb didn't even have a last name; not that it wasn't disclosed. He never had one.
I don't think Kimberly got an official middle name; maybe she doesn't have one. Might have been one in our notes somewhere that never got revealed.- Terrence
