Original Commentary
It's been a while since we've last seen Caleb, but back then (in "Sofia's trip"), Caleb did not wear his bandana. So why is he wearing it now? Solidarity with the past? Because it just felt right? The real answer is simple, he's just Caleb. -Isabel

Modern Commentary
For background:

Caleb is the talented one. He's actually good at performing on stage, which is why he's got a full schedule and is making the kind of money that gets you a manager to handle all the details.

This is good because Caleb isn't a details guy. He's entirely self-absorbed; here he is ducking out of a conversation when the subject shifts away from him. - Terrence

Original Commentary
I'm glad Isabel included the back of Caleb's head - I felt bad about him just showing up for a quick hi/bye appearance. But there wasn't really anything else I had to do with him. I considered having Caleb's manager show up and talk to Brisbane and Kimberly, but I don't have any plans for her just right now - Terrence

Modern Commentary
Caleb is fortunate that he has a manager; he's mostly unable to navigate the real world by himself. If he had to call around to book gigs and figure out transit schedules and such, he'd have to grow up.

Since he has a manager, he can spend all his time just Being Caleb, unfortunately for everybody around him - Terrence

new character

Original Commentary
It's been a long time since we've seen a bird, of any gender, in either of our comics. Birds are portrayed a bit differently in YSIF and ND, they look more human in ND and look more bird-like in YSIF. Here is an example of the two styles together. No points for guessing who she is (and no, there is no relation to the girl in the link above and this girl).. -Isabel

Modern Commentary
It's a simple misdirect joke but I like it. Brisbane's line was originally "Did I wear the ascot for nothing?" but I think we'd need another panel for him to react to Tina's line - Terrence

Story

Original Commentary
In panel three, originally Tina just mentions (I'm paraphrasing here) "But what I'm trying to say here is, can I have my $50 back?". But I had a few issues with it ending like that. This is our first impression of her that we get. She may be a kind, understanding woman who put up with Peter's easily distractible mind, but all we see is "I want my money back". Which makes her seem not so nice. But Terrence really liked the line and reworked it so we were both happy (or at the least, not annoyed). -Isabel

Modern Commentary
Isabel is right. I like the original joke, but we don't get a lot of screen time for Tina. If this were animated and she had five minutes to get a bit of character across maybe, but she just has a couple panels here - Terrence

Peter

Original Commentary
Tina is named after Tina Chesnutt, Vic Chesnutt's wife. She sang backing vocals and played bass on his albums. His FAQ mentioned how people kept assuming that she was his sister; I assume that it's because of how both names fit together. I wanted to be sure that didn't happen with Peter's wife, so she's Tina Nelson - Terrence

Modern Commentary
This is a small con. We've been to a few like that, where it's a college's anime club plus a few vendors.

I'd say the biggest draw is Caleb, but there are a lot of folks who are here because they've got a story similar to Tina's - Terrence

Original Commentary
Terrence wrote this a few days ago but didn't have a punchline. I suggested the punchline over AIM but he didn't respond because he was busy. I reminded him later that night and we went with it. It kind of fits Brisbane's naivete - Isabel

When I wrote this, I left Peter's job blank. It wasn't until I was done lettering that I caught it and decided what Peter was doing with his life - Terrence

Modern Commentary
We never had a plan to bring Peter back, but there's enough here that we could've. I think I wanted to leave that door open since he was a major character in Unlike Minerva, but I'm not sure birds really fit in here any more - Terrence

Original Commentary
I mean, Kimberly had a good scam going as a manager, but it wasn't really a career. Anyhow, I hope I read Brisbane's advice about jokes somewhere. I'd hate to think I made up all of those rules - Terrence

Modern Commentary
The third panel is, by far, the best one. I wish I had done a bit more with Kimberly's line in the final panel - Terrence
