Original Commentary

Poor Miz Taylor is starting to look more like her present day self, is she not?

There was a slight miscommunication between Terrence and myself with this comic. Originally Kimberly was supposed to have been about five years old through all this. Terrence never bothered to tell me this. Of course, me mentioning wanting to draw an angry pregnant Miz Taylor apparently didn't ring any bells with him. Oops. Oh well, it was an easy fix. -Isabel

Fortunately, the timeline is vague and flexible around this point - Terrence

Modern Commentary
Ms. Taylor isn't wrong here. They could have just retired. They could have provided for themselves and Kimberly and maybe Kimberly's future children. However, that is not Mr. Taylor's way.

Deep down, I'm not sure it's Ms. Taylor's way either, but she wouldn't admit it.

I bet Nicole has never been told that her grandpa was briefly a multi-millionaire. - Terrence

Miz Taylor lost a little bit of weight between the time Kimberly was born and the divorce... but of course we all know how she ended up. -Isabel

Modern Commentary
70% tax rate?

That seems excessive, even at the amounts of money that are involved here. I had intended Hippedown to be a place with a high taxes and a high level of government services, and had considered expanding on that in Nicole and Derek where Nicole has expectations about what the government does.

Hippedown isn't the USA, but also I don't want this to be a comic series about tax policy - Terrence

So yes, to answer the question, the basement is about the size of a large closet. The elevator doesn't actually run down there - that button is disabled, same as the 'close door' button. When the elevator was ordered and installed, they expected the basement to be used - Terrence

Modern Commentary
Why an unusable basement?

Because sometimes things get a little strange and different here. And because I wanted to show that there was extensive scope creep when the building was built, and a couple bad ideas - Terrence

Brisbane is referring to Kimberly's actions in the past. It's come up a few times before. Not as much as I probably should've, but she's done it a few times - Terrence

Modern Commentary
Does Mr. Taylor come out ahead in this?

Well, we've seen him living in a cheap apartment in Kimberly's flashbacks and it's not because he's thrifty. - Terrence

Why is this comic here? Not only to explain why the top floors are unused, but to remind folks that this wasn't the end of the story - this wasn't Mr. Taylor's downfall or anything. It's just a minor setback. I keep discovering new facets of Lemon Technology's history... - Terrence

Modern Commentary
I love the flashbacks here. They're all Isabel's doing. It helps keep the thing from just being three guys standing around and talking about stuff that happened decades ago.

I love the reflection of the Lemon Technologies building logo in Mrs. Taylor's sunglasses. - Terrence

I had to check my notes to find out who owned how much of the company. The score in the flashback was - Mr. and Mrs. Taylor: 15%. Grandpa Taylor: 65%. Dan Thompson - 5%. Other minor employees - 5%. Senior partners - 10%.

And I had meant to mention that Mrs. Taylor ran HR, but hadn't have a chance to until now. I had meant to mention that Mrs. Taylor was extremely busy because of the company expansion, but it didn't come up. So what was Dan doing back then? Not sure. I was leaning towards truck driver, back in the early days, but he may have had some kind of lower management role - Terrence

Modern Commentary
Yeah, Grandpa Taylor retains power by playing his family members against each other. I won't say he's responsible for all the conflicts in the series; the Taylors all have their own issues.

But he's not helping - Terrence
