Original Commentary

This is one of those points that Isabel and I had been talking about for over a year now - what's the deal with Brisbane's family. His parents had shown up in the very beginning of Unlike Minerva, but that was subsequently removed from continuity. This means that the field is pretty open right now and there's been little official mention of Brisbane's parents - Terrence

Modern Commentary
Again, I love it when Isabel takes the various hints and intentions I've been putting out and works it into a coherent story. - Terrence

I ended up doing a few really small last minute tweaks, little things like changing "love" to "like in the middle panel, phrasing... things that would not really be missed- the really big tweak I made was to Brisbane's like. originally he was going to say "Only problem is, I'd have to be there". I felt that was almost an immature thing for him to say. And, while I'm sure quite a few people feel like kids around their parents, Brisbane isn't really one of them. I'm sure he's had a lot of time to think about how he would explain all this to Kimberly, but didn't want to be the one who brought it up.Ok, make your own "he didn't want to say it first" jokes here... or maybe I just made it. -Isabel

Modern Commentary
It's never been foreground until now, but Brisbane hasn't been in contact with his parents during the course of the comic. The relationship just isn't there. - Terrence

I made an off-handed comment to Terrence the other day about Brisbane. Now that he and Kimberly are being more intimate with each other, I sure do draw him more handsome. XD Poor Brisbane, poor Brisbane... -Isabel

Modern Commentary
I kinda wish we had went a bit further into how Brisbane became estranged from his parents. But I don't think there was a big moment. Just a slow disintegration of the relationship.

I'd imagine that Brisbane told his folks he got his life together several times, only for it to fall apart shortly thereafter and perhaps they won't just take his word for it again- Terrence

Despite her self-centeredness, Sofia really does care for Brisbane... I'm sure she's doing her best to show it (which is a lot to ask from someone like her).

I'm sure Brisbane's family isn't messed up to anyone who looks on it from the outside - successful family, beautiful people... who can't stand to talk with anyone different from themselves, including their own children. Oh yeah, there's normal for you. At least the Taylors communicate (although half of it is screaming, I must admit). The YSIF cast is probably equally as messed up as the ND cast. They just handle it better. XD -Isabel

Modern Commentary
Sofia ended up being central to a lot of relationships. If someone doesn't have a reason to talk to Brisbane or Kimberly, they probably ended up hanging out with Sofia. - Terrence
