 Monday, September 26th 2005 - [412]Lola's Storm Troopers (1 of 6)
Original Commentary
This was one of those "ping-pong" comics, we just hitting the idea back to each other, adding a little bit more to it each time, till we had a comic we liked. Unfortunately we were only able to get as far as the idea for the comic... I ended up writing the script for the comic while talking to Terrence over the phone this morning. I have a general idea about where this is going and I'll hopefully be writing more some time today. After Terrence saw the comic, he said it was what he envisioned, but it didn't seem to write out on paper well which was what was giving him trouble... a lot of comics are like that. -Isabel Modern Commentary
And thus begins the lounge guys obsessing over Lola.- Terrence

Original Commentary
I ended up talking with Terrence over the phone about this comic as well... I was trying to determine if the phrase "Escort Service" was PG, especially considering the term can be taken in a more adult meaning. But when Terrence saw the comic, he thought it was alright. I just hope the average reader thinks the same thing.-Isabel Modern Commentary
The lounge guys have gone weird. I mean, they hang out together and watch TV static. Normal was never an option.
Dudes are a little creepier here than usual, though.- Terrence

Original Commentary
It has been mentioned (or at least implied) that the guys from the lounge have a crush on Lola. I like how the rabbit has become the unofficial leader, the grey cat has become the voice of reason (such as it is) and tan cat is the lackey. When I started writing them, I just numbered them - guy 1, 2, and 3 and kept forgetting which one was which. Either I've become subconsciously consistant or Isabel has been adjusting my numbering system so that whatever number is most leaderly becomes the rabbit. Mind you, Isabel is writing this arc - Terrence Modern Commentary
Well, she understands what motivates them.

Original Commentary
The "Oh Goody" was added during the lettering stage. Isabel wasn't feeling too well tonight - I think it was a relapse of whatever it is we have - which is why there's a bit of cutting and pasting in the art here - Terrence Modern Commentary
Lounge guys, creeping around the corner!
This is one of those bits of visual comedy that Isabel does a lot better than I do. - Terrence

Original Commentary
It's true. If it were a club, they'd make a banner and elect leaders. I'm reminded, peripherally, of the typical "fan club" you see in manga/anime, like the Prince Yuki fan club in Fruits Basket or Lum's Stormtroopers in Urusei Yatsura. These guys are actually a step up from that (yes, I think this is the first time we've said they're a step up from anything). The stereotypical fan club member seems to do his best to avoid knowing anything about their object of affection. The only function of the anime-style "fan club" , appears to be making sure junior members don't ever interact with their object of desire, which makes me wonder why anybody who were actually interested would join - Terrence Modern Commentary
So, why does he have 50 cans of corn? How long has he had 50 cans of corn? Does canned corn go bad or is it just slightly worse after the date on the can? - Terrence

Original Commentary
I had originally miscoloured Lola's tail in the third panel, thinking that it belonged to the grey cat. The guys from the lounge don't have tails. Isabel says they lost them in the war. I'm glad that we're showing Lola as an active, attractive older person, even though she's old enough to be the mother of most of the main cast. Because life doesn't end at 25. And yes, the lounge guys are just as bad with everyone else's names as we are with theirs - Terrence Modern Commentary
They do know her name is Kimberly, right? She's lived there for years. Have they called her Kimberly before? I don't think they have.
It's odd, since we have folks address each other by name frequently. Readers have called us out on it several times.
We do that because there have been a lot of time I'm reading a comic and I'm trying to see who that dude in the second panel is, but nobody's called him by name in six months...
The teacher never showed up in the comic.
