In the background, behind the houses, is the ocean. Because Hippedown is on an island and they're never too far from the beach. How did it get there before the city bus did? Easy. It doesn't take a circular path and stop every two blocks - Terrence
Modern Commentary
That expression is Brant for "Hello. I am still cute. Please give me another sandwich".

Original Commentary
I really like the way we're building this. This is one of those archetypical thing-in-the-corner stories. Twilight Zone did this really well. You know, you've got a guy who's trying to avoid something. Doesn't matter what, really. Twilight Zone could make anything seem spooky. But he'd run away, take a jet plane to a deserted island, blow up the island, build a cabin out of the wreckage of the island...and he'd calm down for a moment, and look in the corners of his one-room shack. And in the fourth corner, of course, would be The Thing. In the corner. And he'd either scream and run, or else he'd start laughing maniacally, depending very much on how much time there is left in the episode. Kimberly's at the scream-and-run stage. For extra spookiness, sometimes they'd let the guy look at all four corners, then when he looked back at the first corner, it'd be there. Anyhow, we're not going for spooky here, but it's a good explanation and I wanted to use it - Terrence Modern Commentary
Brant says "Hello. I am cute. Please stop running and give me another sandwich."
Meanwhile, Brisbane has no idea what's going on. Kimberly is at least an hour late - no phone call - and is on the run from something. Nobody said that life together was going to be normal.
His week started with the Lounge Guys declaring themselves president of a secret society. It's not getting any more normal from there. - Terrence

Original Commentary
This was the kind of comic where I thought of the actions THEN the script... I actually ended up drawing the comic, then popping some text in.
The reuse of panel one in panel three was to show the action of the lost item on the table between the panels. -Isabel
Modern Commentary
Sometimes people just need space. And sometimes brants just need a sandwich. - Terrence

Original Commentary
A one-panel comic because neither of us are feeling well right now. Isabel's challenge to me: name a dish with carrots in it. I couldn't come up with anything better than California Roll sushi, so we went with the Iron Cheef approach. They're lucky they're not getting carrot-flavored ice cream- Terrence Modern Commentary
I mean, there's carrot cake (which isn't really a dinner), stew with carrots (which needs five hours or so to simmer), or carrots are a side dish (which would hardly warrant mentioning).
Duck a la Carrot is funnier than all of those put together.- Terrence

Original Commentary
Anyone who's had a pet can relate to this. Many times I've stepped on some of our fluffier cat toys and panicked momentarily, before realizing that they weren't the real thing. I only tripped over him once, when the power went out. It was dark, so I don't think he knows it was me - Terrence
For some reason, during this arc I've been visualizing the actions before doing the actual script. What the characters are physically doing is more important than what they're saying. It's a very dramatic change from what I usually do, which is weird because it's all flowing so naturally - Isabel
Modern Commentary
I have tripped over our cats many, many times since then. Especially since we got Mojo, who is dark grey and enjoys lying in doorways when it's dark.
Sorry, Mojo.
Anyhow, Kimberly just took a shower in the hope that the stray wouldn't be able to track her by scent. It didn't work.- Terrence
 Sunday, September 11th 2005 - [399]Kimberly's bad week (24 of 36)
Original Commentary
I love it when one character asks a question and gets an answer which is relevant to the situation but entirely fails to answer the original question. Does Lola allow pets? Good question. I really like the exchange between Brisbane and Kimberly in the second and third panel - it wouldn't be a stray if they took it in - Terrence Modern Commentary
I like how Brisbane just assumes that Kimberly would get a pet and not tell him. And he'd be ok with that, because it means they get a pet.- Terrence
