I tried... so hard to come up with something more witty, less lame than "yes and no", but that really is the only thing Brisbane could come up with at such short notice, I really don't think he was expecting her to try and lead the conversation that way when he played through it in his head.

Brisbane's peculiar look in the second panel wasn't mean as "laughing at Kimberly", he's just somewhat all over the map with his emotions at the moment, both frightened to face this conversation with Kimberly, but also so... so happy, to be getting it over with, so the two of them can eventually move on to the next step in their relationship.

There might be a bit of bemusement in Brisbane's little smirk there- but if anything it has to do with being able to almost redo a critical moment in his life, and realize he gets to screw it up again. -Isabel

Modern Commentary
I mean, of course they're going to talk about it more instead of going straight to sex. This is an emotionally significant moment for them. They've got a lot of talking to do and a lot of emotions to express beforehand.

And the other thing about the talking is we can show it in-comic... - Terrence

It's funny... in order for Brisbane to show how strong he's gotten he has to show how weak he truly was. Poor guy.

I had planned on Kimberly to start crying at this stage in the third panel, but after looking over the script before inking, decided it was better to hold off on too much emotion from her right now, Brisbane still has quite a bit to say and I'm sure he's appreciate it if she wasn't knee deep in tears for it.

The stressed under eye skin remained though because it was already inked. Oops. Ah well, it makes her look really exhausted, which works for this conversation. -Isabel

Modern Commentary
And Brisbane says what I've been saying about him in the modern commentary.

I'm not exactly going in blind here, but I'm also not re-reading everything beforehand when I write these. It's been a little while since I've done a full re-read and I want to allow myself to be surprised.

That and Brisbane is a very different person at the beginning and end of the series. If I read to the end then come back to the early stuff, I'll keep expecting the more mature, competent Brisbane of the later series. - Terrence

Original Commentary

Brisbane's line in the middle panel is pretty much what motivated him throughout all this- the one thing he needed to realize before he could move on with his relationship with Kimberly.

Originally I had planned on having this issue be talked about in a story arc featuring Brisbane and his sister Sofia, where, with her help, Brisbane realizes that women used her and he was- well, I don't want to give things away too much. But then I thought, "No, Brisbane needs to have this discussion with Kimberly - and he needs to be able to realize this so he can be mature enough to really be with her"... and, well, there you go. -Isabel

Modern Commentary
As much as Kimberly might want to close the deal, the best deal is one that leaves both parties happy.

And Brisbane needs to get through this, and he needs someone he can get through this with. - Terrence
